How to Style: Oversized Sweater on a Curvy Body Type

As a passionate body positive advocate, I am always noticing certain styles that are most often not worn by curvy body types. One of those styles is the “oversized sweater” trend. Maybe this trend isn’t seen on curvier women often because so many of us feel insecure sizing up our clothes so that they appear oversized. There is no shame in sizing up or wearing a size that you are not used to wearing (and it’s waaay more comfy to wear oversized clothes)!
Rest assured, curvy women can wear oversized sweaters. As a curvy woman myself, I personally like to wear muted or neutral-colored sweaters. By wearing these colors, more attention is brought up to my face rather than to my torso. For example, it might seem like a good idea to wear a bright orange sweater, but it’ll add too much distraction to the outfit. Additionally, the bright orange color would add visual bulk to my look (and isn’t necessarily trendy right now). By wearing, for example, the cream color that I’m wearing in the photos, the overall outfit looks stylish and the attention is directed to my face (if you love lipstick as much as I do, then this is a good thing!).

I recommend, if your sweater is long enough, tucking in the front of it and blousing it a bit. This will emphasize your curves and waist as well as portray that classic, “oversized” look. If your sweater is shorter or slightly cropped, it’s also a good idea to tuck the hem under slightly to help show off a curvy body type.
As seen in my photos, I have styled my H&M fringed sweater with raw-hem skinny jeans, a gem choker, and tan booties. Although I wore blue jeans for this photoshoot, I also think that black skinny jeans would have looked good as well. If you have any questions regarding how to put together a similar look, send me a shout via the form on the blog. Thanks for reading!
